The single biggest question new buyers ask is simple: can I actually register a kei truck in my state? The answer comes down to federal import law and your state’s own rules.
The 25-year federal rule
Under NHTSA and U.S. Customs regulations, a vehicle that was never originally built for the U.S. market can be imported once it is 25 years or older, measured from the month and year of manufacture. At that point it is exempt from FMVSS safety standards and EPA emissions requirements, which is why most kei trucks on the U.S. market are 1999 and earlier.
State registration is a separate question
Clearing customs is not the same as being road-legal. A handful of states restrict kei vehicles to off-road, farm, or low-speed use, while many others register them as standard trucks with no issue. Always confirm with your local DMV before bidding.
